It was a double-digit day at the top in the Space City to kick off the Disc Golf Pro Tour — Texas State Disc Golf Championships presented by Lone Star Disc.

Norway’s Anniken Kristiansen Steen was the first player to hit that mark early Friday to kick off the opening round of the final stop of the Texas swing. Ohn Scoggins would best that score by one stroke not too much later for the solo lead heading into the weekend in Houston.

Anthony Barela was the only player in MPO to hit double digits.

Both leaders, as has been the case so far on the Elite Series in 2024, don’t have much breathing room.

Scoggins kept things going from the last DGPT stop not too far away in Austin with another 1000-plus rated round. She was clean in just about every area — 16-of-18 in fairway hits, 72% in C2 in regulation and 3-of-4 from Circle 2 with the putter, including a 38-foot make on 18 to grab the solo lead at 11-under.

Steen (-10) had a tap-in on 18 to close out her round, unofficially rated 1010, which is 68 points above her rating and 13 points higher than her previous best round, ratings-wise. Steen started 7-under through the first eight holes and strung together four-straight on the back nine.

Joining Scoggins with the only other bogey-free rounds of the day were Holyn Handley and Sarah Hokom, who will round out the lead card at 9-under and 8-under, respectively.

Kat Mertsch will lead the chase card at 7-under, a round that included three bogies. Four players are tied a 6-under: Jessica Weese, Henna Blomroos, Valerie Mandujano and Lykke Lorentzen, who closed her round in a big way.

The margins are even slimmer in MPO.

Barela’s 10-under featured six-straight birdies to finish en route to his 1075-rated round. He overcame bogies on the front nine — both coming off OB shots — to return to his familiar spot so far in 2024 squarely in the mix.

Still limited with a lingering injury, Calvin Heimburg overcame an even rougher start. After back-to-back bogies to open, Heimburg, without his sidearm, rattled off three-straight birdies before another bogey. That was it, however, as Heimburg with nine birdies and just three total pars on the day.

Heimburg leads four players tied for second at 9-under, including Mason Ford, Gannon Buhr and Ezra Aderhold.

Nathan Queen and Robert Burridge sit at 8-under and five more players are knotted at 7-under, just three strokes off of the lead.

Get ready for a shootout in the Texas finale.
