Sunday, March 17, 2024 - 00:13

After a delay to start the day, the forecast of rough weather disappeared, opening an all-out assault on the calm track at Harvey Penick Golf Course.

FPO

Scoggins set the blistering pace early.

With a 1055-rated round — unofficially good for the fifth-highest rated round of all-time in FPO — the three-time PDGA Masters World Champion surged to the top of the leaderboard with a 13-under scorecard.

It was a clinic in every stat category for Scoggins: 90% in fairway hits, 28% in parked, 67% in C1 in regulation, 83% in C2 in regulation and a whopping 8.53 in strokes gained tee-to-green, best in the field by over a stroke. The putter was working like normal with a 100% mark in C1X, two hits from C2 and 335 feet of total putting, the third-highest total in the FPO field.

The 1055 rated round ties Kristin Tattar on the all-time list. It’s Scoggins second 1050-plus rated round in her career.

She got it going quick with birdies on the first six holes and tacked on six more in a row after a lone bogey on hole 10.

Right on her heels in Day 1 leader Kat Mertsch, just two strokes back at 14-under par. Mertsch stayed firmly in the mix with a solid 7-under round.

The two have a bit of separation on the rest of the field at six strokes. Missy Gannon and Henna Blomroos are tied for third at 8-under.

Heidi Laine had the second-hottest round of the day at 8-under to jump 19 spots into a tie for seventh.

MPO

The double-digit trend continued in the afternoon with 11 players going at least 10 under par in MPO.

Gannon Buhr set the space with a scoring 1088-rated 14-under par to jump 23 spots into solo second place, two strokes behind the new leader in Austin, Texas: Niklas Anttila.

Anttila (-19) was one of three players at 12-under par on Saturday, along with Cole Redalen (T11) and Evan Smith (T19).

Buhr went 6-under through the first five holes with an eagle on the fifth. He had a bogey on the sixth, which continued to torment the field as the hardest hole scoring-wise. After that, it was a 7-under run on the back nine. Buhr hit 95% of the fairways on Saturday and was 78% in C1 in regulation and capitalized with a 100% (13-for-13) in the circle.

Antilla was steady as well in every area with an 11-for-11 mark in C1 putting but hit two OBs with bogies on 14 and 18.

It'll be a brand-new lead card as Matthew Orum jumped to a tie for third with Joseph Anderson at 16-under, one back of Buhr and two off of Anttila. Both shot 9-under on Saturday. Corey Ellis and Andrew Marwede, the co-leaders entering the day, are also 16-under. Anthony Barela and Calvin Heimburg round out the chase card at 15-under.

It was a Saturday scorcher from the start in Austin and Championship Sunday is set up for yet another sprint to the finish on the DGPT.
