What a finish to the Texas swing of the Disc Golf Pro Tour.

Coming into Championship Sunday of the Texas State Disc Golf Championships presented by Lone Star Discs, everyone knew the FPO race was going to come down to the wire, but it happened in MPO as well.

But both champions clutched up when the pressure was the highest.

Anniken Steen becomes the first FPO player from Norway to win on the Elite Series and the fifth different FPO winner through five events to win this season. Anthony Barela is the first repeat winner on the DGPT in 2024 and becomes this sixth player to pick up their first and second Elite Series or Major win in the same season.

Both had to hold off furious pushes from their competitors and it resulted in another photo finish on the DGPT.

For Steen, it was Kristin Tattar, who entered the day three strokes back before tying things up through 11 holes. But Steen, who was so steady through every single round, bounced right back with a birdie on 12 and followed with three-straight 30-foot putts to seal things.

In the afternoon, Barela entered with a six-stroke lead. On the front nine, it was a surging Ezra Aderhold with nine-straight birdies. From there, it was Gannon Buhr who took over the big push with 10-straight birdies, but Barela did not blink, cashing huge, pressure-packed putts on 16 and 17 to escape with a one-stroke win and his second title of the season.

Steen averaged a 1006 rating for the event, unofficially, 64 points above her rating. On top of the clutch putts at the biggest moments throughout the weekend, Steen was stellar off the lead, leading the field in C2 in regulation on the weekend at 83% and a 100% mark in fairway hits on Sunday. She had just two OB strokes all weekend and one bogey in 54 holes.

Tattar’s 10-under final round lifted her to solo second place and Ohn Scoggins rounded out the podium one behind Tattar and three behind Steen.

Barela averaged 1077 golf on the weekend and led so many stat categories for the weekend: Fairway hits (89%), parked (30%), C1 in regulation (69%), C2 in regulation (87%) and strokes gained tee-to-green at 18.15 – almost three strokes ahead of second place.

Buhr’s 15-under final round – one stroke behind Barela’s course record from Saturday – checked in with an unofficial round rating of 1102. He had five putts from 30 feet out at least in his 10-hole birdie run and ace runs on 15 and 18.

Buhr finished one stroke back at 33-under and Aderhold grabbed a podium finish in solo third at 30-under par.

Another stellar finish only adds to a wild start to the 2024 DGPT season, and it’s just getting started.
